A coalition consisting of Canada’s largest news organisations has initiated legal action against OpenAI which is the developer of the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT. It is claimed that these articles are utilized by the company wrongfully to train its software.
The lawsuit consists of prominent media entities like the Toronto Star, Postmedia, Metroland Media, The Canadian Press, the Global and Mail, and CBC making what is supposedly the first case of its kind in Canada. In a collective statement, the media focussed that journalism serves the interest of the public, and appropriation of OpenAI of journalism from other companies for its own commercial benefit is quite unlawful.
OpenAI contends that its models are very much trained on publicly available data, the company further stated to the BBC that the software is tied up in fair use and relevant international copyright principles.
They have emphasised their collaboration with the news publishers, including attribution, proper display, and links to their content in ChatGPT searches. Along with this, it also includes offering straightforward options for publishers to opt-out if they select.
The Canadian media coalition has accused OpenAI of disregarding protective measures like paywall and copyright notices which are designed to prevent unauthorised content reproduction.
The coalition has claimed that OpenAI has frequently violated copyright and online usage terms by scraping extensive amounts of content from Canadian media to develop products that also include ChatGPT.
The group which includes the publishers of leading newspapers in Canada is pursuing punitive damages of C$20,000 for each article they have alleged was unlawfully used to train the platform ChatGPT which has potentially resulted in billions of dollars in total compensation. Earlier this week, according to the reports of the Wall Street Journal, the valuation of OpenAI reached C$219 million following its latest fundraising round from investors.
